During retirement, John Little studied winemaking and viticulture at Wenatchee Valley College, honing his skills working with well-known Chelan winemaker Ray Sandidge and grape grower Miguel Martinez. The Littles began planting wine grapes in 2000 that now total seven acres. Eventually Rio Vista will be 100% estate grown.
Their son (also John), a graduate of the wine program at Walla Walla Community College, is assistant winemaker. Granddaughter Kelsey Harding Chavez coordinates the multitude of weddings that take place at “Rio Vista on the River” and daughter Kristen Harding helps out at the tasting rooms. Oldest daughter, Kerry Siderius, is a professional watercolor artist with an art gallery exhibit at both locations, and her paintings adorn the wine labels.
Rio Vista 2012 Malbec, $32
This Malbec was sourced from Antoine Creek Vineyard, not far from the Lake Chelan-based winery—and then aged for 18 months in oak.
Nose: High-toned scents of red and blue fruit mingled with currants, leather and pepper spice notes.
Taste: A lithe and supple wine with a rich profile of blue plum and black cherry, nuanced with earthy shades of violet, tarragon, graham cracker, peppercorn. Smooth, nimble tannins linger on the finish.
