Aerospace engineer Randolph “Randy” Schemkes started as a hobby winemaker in his Snohomish garage in 2006. His son, also named Randolph, but who goes by his middle name of Alexander, joined his dad two years later while he was attending the University of Washington. Over a game of pool one Thanksgiving, Alexander floated the idea by his dad of a launching a commercial winery. “That was all it took. Randy was beyond excited about the idea,” says Alexander.
They had their eyes set on the San Juan Islands, and ultimately decided to buy property, build and launch Orcas Island Winery. “We were the first winery on Orcas Island. We still continue to make all the wine, manage the tasting room and winery, tend the property and take care of our two-acres of vineyard,” says Alexander. “When the two of us share an idea or a passion there is nothing that will stop us from making it come to fruition.”
A few years later they realized their hometown of Snohomish was a vibrant community with a beautiful historic downtown, a river, shops and restaurants, even a craft distillery. Again, father and son joined forces and opened a sister winery, thus Randolph Cellars was born.
“Our tasting room is on street level in the heart of the historic downtown,” says Alexander. “When you are in the tasting room, the entire production area and cellar are all right below your feet. The cellar houses our barrels and tanks and people can go downstairs and walk around and see our whole production.”
From the river view patio, patrons can sit outside with a glass of wine and enjoy scenic views of the Snohomish river, sky divers and hot air balloons. You can visit at 1007 First Street, Snohomish; www.randolphcellars.com
