Winemaker Ashley Trout of Flying Trout Wines will take an undefined leave of absence as the winemaker for the brand beginning on May 1, 2013. Trout, who is expecting her second child in June, is looking forward to spending time away from the cellar and the road to be at home with her children.

“I’m going to have two little ones under the age of three in my house,” says Trout laughing. “With my husband’s heavy travel and cellar schedule (husband Brian Rudin is also a winemaker), I knew it was time to part ways from the brand.”
Trout launched Flying Trout Wines in 2004, quickly building a cult-like following for her Malbec and malbec blends and her Torrontes, which she has made in Mendoza, Argentina.
In 2010, after Flying Trout was acquired by TERO Estates, Ashley began making her wines side by side with TERO Estates co-owner and winemaker Doug Roskelley at their facility in Milton-Freewater. Roskelley will take over winemaking duties for Flying Trout Wines.
“My goal is to maintain the integrity of Flying Trout Wines while honoring Ashley’s winemaking philosophies,” says Roskelley.
Flying Trout Wines will continue to be poured at both the winery by appointment or during specials events, and at the TERO Estates and Flying Trout tasting room, located in the Marcus Whitman Hotel, which is open daily.
A farewell dinner for Ashley Trout will be held Thursday, April 25, 2013 at 6pm at the Marcus Whitman Hotel. A five-course Argentinian inspired menu by celebrated Chef Antonio Campolio will be paired with Flying Trout Wines for $65 per person. Music, a rolling slide show of photographs spanning Ashley’s career, and a sale of library wines will be included. RSVP to talk@teroestates.com.
