A brand new scholarship program targeting the future generation of women in Washington wine was announced on January 24, 2022 by the Washington Wine Industry Foundation.
The scholarship, established by the Alliance of Women in Washington Wine, was created to inspire, connect, and advance the future workforce of the wine industry. Facilitated by the Foundation, a $5,000 scholarship will be awarded to a female student pursuing a viticulture or enology related program. The deadline for applicants to apply is April 25, 2022.
“Coming together as a group, elevating each other, and helping mentor young women into the industry are what we are all about,” shared Kristin Scheelar, an Alliance board member, “and this scholarship is one way of delivering on the mission.”
Communications director for the Alliance, Fiona Mak, is also the owner and winemaker of SMAK Wines in Walla Walla. “We are pleased to announce our Inaugural Scholarship facilitated by the Washington Wine Industry Foundation,” she tells Washington Tasting Room Magazine.
“Scholarships open more doors for students into the Washington wine industry. Those students are our future and the more we can invest, the more will be returned,” says Vicky Scharlau, foundation executive director. “With the vision of a thriving wine industry, scholarships like this one help build a powerful cohort of the future.”
Other scholarship opportunities available through the Washington Wine Industry Foundation include: Walter J. Clore Scholarship, Horse Heaven Hills Scholarship, George and Susan Carter Scholarship, Albert Don Memorial Scholarship and the Foundation Fund Scholarship.
