Port Angeles, Wash. – Olympic Cellars not only brought home three medals from the 2013 Denver International Wine Competition, but were awarded a “Best of Show” designation as well for their 2009 Cabernet Franc, which also won a Double Gold. The winery’s 2011 Barn Nouveau, a Malbec blend, won gold, and the 2009 Syrah scored silver. More than 750 wines from around the world were entered in this competition which took place on Sept. 7-8, 2013 at the Omni Interlaken Resort inBroomfield, Colo.
“We couldn’t be more thrilled with the awards,” says Lisa Martin, winery co-owner and operations manager. “All three of the wines that we entered in the competition came home winners. We are particularly proud of the Best of Show designation given to our Cab Franc. This means that the wine scored more points than any other red wine in the Denver competition! We look forward to sharing this wine with our customers.”
The 2009 Cabernet Franc and 2009 Syrah were fermented and placed in barrels by former Olympic Cellars Winemaker Benoit Murat before returning to his native France, then finished and bottled by Consulting Winemaker Virginie Bourgue and Lisa Martin.
The 2011 Barn Nouveau blend was made by Virginie Bourgue. It’s an elegant wine, deep red in color with violet and cherry on the nose and fine tannins, cherry and plum notes on the finish. This wine is currently in distribution.
The award-winning Cabernet Franc and Syrah will be pre-released to the general public during the Olympic Peninsula Wineries’ Harvest Winery Tour, November 9-11. The wines will then be cellared until their official release date in the spring/summer of 2014.
