To produce high-quality wine grapes, effective pest management is essential. So, while this book won’t make the New York Times best seller list, having a copy around could prove a lifesaver to a vineyard. The Field Guide for Integrated Pest Management in Pacific Northwest Vineyards (PNW644) published in June 2013 is a must-own edition for anyone growing grapes either for wine or juice production.

The guide features over 240 full-color photographs of the region’s most common pests, diseases, weeds, and abiotic stresses, along with detailed descriptions of recommended monitoring and management methods for vineyards. Users will find themselves turning frequently to the hundreds of annotated color images, as well as referencing the color-coded and indexed details on integrating pest management with other vineyard tasks.
This vineyard management manual is the result of collaboration among experts in fields ranging from entomology and plant pathology to viticulture, and has been written by 24 specialists from Washington, Oregon, and Idaho’s leading universities, related industries, and the USDA. More than just a book for trouble-shooting problems, The Field Guide presents information about general vineyard management for a systems-wide integrated pest management (IPM) approach.
Production of the IPM field guide was made possible by funding from the Western Integrated Pest Management Center and Washington Wine Industry Foundation. A limited number of free copies will be available for participants at various WSU Viticulture Extension events throughout the year. Copies may be purchased ($30) here or peruse other titles from the WSU Extension Online Store.
